Into the Morn

Lately, I've been listening to a few of my old CD albums of Iona, one of my all-time favourite bands. The closest genre is progressive rock/celtic, but best not to pigeon-hole their style. They're probably the best band I've ever heard live, for their varied yet cohesive musical talents and the profundity of their messages. I didn't know christian music could be such a beautiful art until I discovered Iona in the 90s.

During my university years oversea, I was captured by their rich christian concepts on journeys of faith, drawing from the legendary voyages of early christian saints like St. Columba and St. Brendan. Christianity's spread to the western world was due to the early heroic journeys of some celtic monks into the unknown. Really, when I was in a foreign land, Iona's songs not only provided me comfort, but fired my imagination for the unthinkables.

Iona, by the way, is a beautiful scottish island where St Columba founded his monastery with few companions in the 6th century. He sailed there after being exiled for his involvement in a battle in native Ireland. Iona became a famed learning and missionary center where christianity spread to Scotland, England and Europe. This inspiration was where the band got their name from.

While stuck in another frustrating jam this morning, the angelic voice of Joanne Hogg captured me again in "Journey Into the Morn". Maybe because of the song's message for me at such a time. The old-fashioned faith of the ancient monks still encourage me more than whatever I hear in present times.

Out of the night
Into the morn
Drawing us gently
Through the eye of the storm
Out of the sorrow
Into the joy
Where we'll dwell in the highlands
With Him evermore

Sealed by a promise we are called to become
Those who endure 'til this race is won
And leaving their past, heading for more
Than our hearts can imagine
The final reward

This song is more about the finished life of a christian passing into eternity. But it has a comforting message for my present tiny journeys...I really can only imagine the final reward.
